These sculptured stones have long been associated with Zen Buddhism and Tea Ceremony in Japan. They are of natural origin and are never modified, except for flattening the lower surface so they are stable on a pedestal. Occurring naturally in rivers, oceans and karst areas, there is a strict criteria used for hunting and choosing a stone. The criteria is based on: Color; Shape; Markings and Surface Patterns. Now collected and admired around the world, they have a history going back 1400 years.
